  • Whats going to happen to my son?

I wonder what my son will use as a phone when he gets older? I’m sure my iPhone 5 will look like an antique when he is 5 or 6 years old, just like the original iPhone I have in a drawer somewhere looks like an antique today. What kind of technology will power his first computer or his first car? Will Google finally have self-driving cars on the road when he get his license in 16 years? Will programmers be designing apps for the new Google Contact lens hud?

Will Nike have those self-lacing shoes we were promised in Back to the Future yet?

It’s hard to imagine preparing my first kid for a future that I am unaware of. What will our political system look like? Will we have risen up and taken our freedom back or will we be plunged into the darkness of total tyranny in 20 years? Should I prepare him to be self-employed and start his own business or should I teach him the basics of working for the government because those will be the only jobs available? Will our dollar fail an collapse the economy before he is old enough to go out on his own, or will he be able to take advantage of a significant change and recovery?

One thing I know for sure, I’ll have to teach him to prepare himself. He will need to learn how to be flexible and roll with the punches. The only thing I can honestly teach him, that will prepare him for the future, is to learn.

  • Definitely teach him old skills as well as new. You never know when you will need to hunt for food or purify water. I’m not even speaking necessarily of politics… natural disasters obviously are a big deal too.

  • I agree with WaitingToShrug. Also teaching your child to think critically, be adaptable, and take on the attitude of a learner for life never hurts either

  • Who gets shoes with laces. Velcro, man.
