  • Revisited: “You didn’t build that”

“Obama, July 13, 2012: There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together. That’s how we funded the GI Bill. That’s how we created the middle class. That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam. That’s how we invented the Internet. That’s how we sent a man to the moon. We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President — because I still believe in that idea. You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.”

What can you get out of this? What is the point of this entire little speech?

First, he is not saying that businesses aren’t the result of intelligent people who work hard. There is no escaping the implication he makes, but arguably he wasn’t saying that at all. He was making a much larger point.

What he is saying is that businesses would not be there without the government, that private entities owe their very existence to the government. According to Obama we cannot survive without government. Bridges cannot be built, fires cannot be put out and the internet would not exist without government.

What he is doing is making an argument for bigger government and more control. That the government is the protector, the creators and the keepers of the peace. That the government is the reason we can communicate the way we do and the only reason our houses aren’t all burnt to the ground.

He is championing the idea that, without government, we’d head straight back to the dark ages, completely ignoring the fact that businesses exist, not because of the government, but in spite of the government.

Answer this question; do businesses exist because of the government or in spite of the government? If your answer is the former, then explain how the government has helped. If the latter, how has it gotten in the way? Try arguing both ways, it’s always interesting to see how playing “devils advocate” may expand your view a little.

  • Simplified: How to write a modern Apple product review.

It’s simple, here’s your template. Feel free to elaborate as needed.

“Innovation at Apple is over … [it’s] just incremental improvements, nothing ground breaking, the best is over for Apple. The [insert ANY Apple product here] is playing catch up to Google Android and probably will have a mediocre customer adoption.”

You should also be sure to write: “But Apple fans will buy millions of them” to the end of your “review” so you won’t be entirely wrong.

  • I miss Calvin and Hobbes

One of the greatest comic strips ever made.

    period.

I grew up on Calvin and Hobbes. I remember being a kid and reading through every one of the books over and over and over again. I couldn’t get enough. I hope my son turns out, somehow, a mix between the insanity of Calvin and the wisdom of Hobbes. I consider this comic to be “high art” and anyone who knows Calvin and Hobbes knows exactly what I mean.

I just miss the little guys. They made life good.

  • O.N.E.

Me and Paulette have decided to name our baby boy Oliver. I personally love the name and she does too. (of course her family insists we are insane, but she’s already written about that)

However, now that we’ve decided to name him Oliver we have a unique opportunity to give him some awesome initials! If only we could come up with a middle name that starts with an “n” his initials will be: ONE

    How cool is that?

    Oliver N________ Edwards (ONE)

If he has an ear for music he can start a band called O.N.E. and if he wants to start a business he can call it O.N.E Enterprises. You get the point.

Only one problem, we can’t really think of a suitable middle name that starts with “N.” There are the common Nathaniel and Nicholas, but I’m not sold on them yet.

Just looking for that ONE name that will make this abbreviation work. Get it, ONE name… haha, oh well.

  • Obama gets spanked, shoots back with a joke.

After Obama pointed out the Romney has money invested in China this interesting exchange took place:

ROMNEY: “Mr. President, have you looked at your pension?”

OBAMA: “I don’t look at my pension. It’s not as big as yours so it doesn’t take as long,” Obama said. “I don’t check it that often.”

ROMNEY: “Let me give you some advice. Look at your pension. You also have investments in Chinese companies,” Romney countered.

Funny, nobody noticed the hypocrisy in Obama’s assertion or the stupidity of a president who is proud of the fact that he doesn’t even read through his own investments. What everyone noticed was the “Your pension is bigger than mine” comment.

Romney is more financially successful than Obama, probably because he pays attention to his investments.

I’m not saying I support either one of them, but this is stupid.

  • Global warming is almost nonexistent for over a decade study shows

Interesting stuff. A recent study shows that between 1997 and today the earth’s temperature has remained flat. No increase and no decrease. That’s over a decade of zero change.

“Since 1880, when reliable temperature records began to be kept across most of the globe, the world has warmed by about 0.75 degrees Celsius.

From the start of 1997 until August 2012, however, figures released last week show the answer is zero: the trend, derived from the aggregate data collected from more than 3,000 worldwide measuring points, has been flat.”
