  • That’s unfortunate. I understand patent laws but sometimes it is just silly.

  • @firetyger - Samsung is doing the same thing to Apple with 3G in the Netherlands. It’s anything but silly to them. It’s big money if they can get compensation or ban a competitor’s product from an entire region. I’m not a fan of software patents in general.

“If people had understood how patents would be granted when most of today’s ideas were invented and had taken out patents, the industry would be at a complete standstill today…The solution is patenting as much as we can. A future startup with no patents of its own will be forced to pay whatever price the giants choose to impose. That price might be high. Established companies have an interest in excluding future competitors” – Bill Gates

I thought patents were supposed to encourage innovation by protecting an inventor’s right to profit from their work. They’ve managed to completely flip that around.

  • When the powerful exert their powers sometimes competition gets hurt.@firetyger - There are patent trolls that sit on their patents and wait for the big bucks to roll in. Apple in this case may or may not be trying to defend their turf. You still think the powerful are mostly fair? Things will get worse if we don’t limit the powers of the powerful.

  • @luctamur - Oh, I know it’s not silly to them. They make a lot of money this way. It’s more, I see it as silly considering what the original intent behinds patents were. Like you said, we’ve got it completely turned around these days. Which is sad.

  • @PPhilip - I don’t judge all corporations on a few bad apples (no pun intended). It’s not my place to cap the success of a business. Yes, I do believe in having some regulations out there. Also, I think bailouts for companies is flat out wrong. But I don’t believe companies/corporations are inherently evil or unfair.

We need to look into changing patent laws, I think.
